Pictures of Marrakech, Morocco. Famous landmarks of the ancient city include the medina, the old town surrounded by a wall which contains a maze of narrow streets and souks (markets). At the center of the medina is the Place Djemaa el Fna, a large open square which comes to life at dusk. Food vendors, snake charmers, monkey handlers, henna artists, fortune tellers, gamers, musicians and more create a carnival atmosphere. Bahia Palace, built in 1866, highlights the skills of wood, tile, and stone craftsman. In Morocco, non-muslims cannot enter mosques, but anyone can visit the Ben Youssef Medersa. A medersa is an Islamic university, although this one is now a museum only. It was built in the 14th century and is decorated with Andalusian motifs. Finally, view pictures of the Jardin Majorelle, a 12 acre botanical garden maintained by Yves Saint Laurent. Note: I've mixed the spelling of the city with -ech and -esh because both are commonly used.
