Kasbahs are desert castles of North Africa built by the local Berbers. The town of Ait Benhaddou has a large grouping of well maintained mud-brick kasbahs, thanks to the many movies filmed here, including Lawrence of Arabia. It's an ancient town that was known before movies due to its location along a major Sahara caravan route. At first they all look the same, but if you look at the geometric patterns you'll see each kasbah is unique. Kasbahs usually have 4 towers and different but related families live in each tower. On the first floor is the kitchen, the second floor are bedrooms, and the third and fourth floors are social areas.
