Food in Gracias, Honduras

Restaurante Guancascos is an excellent choice for lunch. You can get a shredded chicken sandwich with fries and a salad for L.28 (2 USD), and beer for L.10 (.70 USD). The food is fresh and very tasty. Dining is on the tiled-floored room with a balcony that overlooks the city and surrounding mountains. When I returned for a dinner of tacos and enchiladas (L.9 or .65 USD each), I watched a lightening storm dance over the distant mountains.

For hiking food supplies, visit one of the many small stores hidden in nooks around town.

There are other restaurants in town, but most of them cater to locals and not tourists. They are generally very cheap, but tend to be dark, small, and not very clean. Some of the better options are La Fonda, Rancho Lily, and Reposteria y Pizzeria La Esquisita.

Lodging in Gracias, Honduras

Hotel accommodations in Gracias range from very comfortable to almost camping out, so although this is a small town, you’ll find lodging that will suit almost any mood.

Hotel San Marcos at L.80 (5.70 USD) for a single with a private bathroom, fan, TV, and linens is small but clean.

A number of people in town recommended Hotel Erick, a steal at L.41 (3 USD). It is cheap, and the bedbugs won’t get you.

The lodge at Celaque National Park charges L.10 (.70 USD) a night. This is the cheapest place around, but it is 1.5 hours hike outside of town. The building is in quite good shape and contains 7 beds. There is a lot of floor space to sleep if all the beds are full. In place of bathrooms you will find 5 outhouses. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots and pans if you wish to do your own cooking, and there’s a sink with running water. There is a wood stove for cooking, a screened patio, and books for entertainment. Remember to bring candles or a flashlight because there is no electricity.

Guancascos is by far the most deluxe accommodation in town. Rooms cost L.70 (5 USD) when I visited, but prices will rise to L.130 (9.30 USD) when the resort is finished. The rooms have high ceilings, tile floors, and engraved designs on the windows. They are larger than most you’ll find in the country, complete with a ceiling fan, television, and real hot water. No nozzle heater here, and there were actually a separate hot and cold handles in the shower – a rarity in Honduras.

Activities in Gracias, Honduras

The ruins of San Cristobal Castle guard Gracias, though its meager keep and walls are perhaps more functional than romantic. More to the scale of the small, abandoned ruins that dot the landscape in Germany than more massive fortresses like Dover Castle in England, its size suggests that it was not built to protect the community below but as an outpost for a colonial army. The presence of carpenters and other restoration workers when I was there seemed to confirm the castle's historical significance. The tomb of a former president is inside the fort. Overall, it's a good walk and an excellent few minutes' diversion, and the view from the hill is breathtaking with the mountains on one side and the town on the other.
